War in Ukraine: Russian occupation official killed in attack

Vitaly Gora, deputy head of the Nova Kakhovka administration, was seriously injured Saturday morning after an “attack” on his home and sustained several gunshot wounds.

The local authorities appointed by Moscow announced the death of an official in the Russian occupation administration in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine from his wounds.

“Vitaly Gora, deputy head of the Nova Kakhovka administration, who is responsible for municipal services, died of his injuries,” local official Katerina Gubareva said, Saturday evening, quoted by this administration on a telegram.

The TASS news agency quoted an unidentified source from this administration as saying that the director was seriously injured Saturday morning after an “attack” on his house, and he sustained several gunshot wounds.

The locality of Nova Kakhovka is located on the Dnieper River and under Russian control, about 80 km east of Kherson.

The attacks targeted several Moscow-appointed officials

In recent months, several Russian-appointed officials in the Ukrainian lands they occupied have come under attack.

Since a significant part of the Kherson region and part of the Zaporizhia region were captured, the Kremlin has been pursuing a Russification policy there with the aim of possible annexation. Moscow introduced the ruble there and encouraged its residents to obtain Russian passports.

At the same time, the Ukrainian army has been conducting counterattacks on the Kherson front for several weeks. It has managed to reclaim territory and approach this city of 290,000 inhabitants, but it has not yet been able to penetrate deeply into the Russian defenses.
